Last Minute Valentine’s Day Ideas

It’s the day before Valentine’s Day, do you know how you will show your love? There are alot of expectations for those that are involved with someone. As a society, we are bombarded with commercials and messages that seem to say that the only way to demonstrate your affection is with expensive jewelry, fine dining, and a lavish bouquet of flowers.

If you have waited until now, it may be next to impossible to come up with funds for diamonds, or to get into a trendy restaurant. So here are a few things to help you brainstorm a great idea for your loved one.

There are many stories about the origin of St. Valentines Day. I prefer the story that originated in Rome. Emporer Claudius II had a difficult time getting new military recruits due to the cruel and savage campaigns he waged. As a result, he outlawed marriages. Valentine, a priest, covertly performed the ceremonies to unite those in true love.

This story is my favorite, because it demonstrates the reason why this holiday is popular. This is supposed to celebrate the love we feel for someone. My four suggestions, are all designed to capture those feelings on this special day.

1. Go backward in time. Do something that you enjoyed in the past or when you were first dating. Did you have a history of making a mixed tape? Then listen to a music selection you have put together. Add a card and a single flower and you have a romantic evening.

2. Tap into your childish side.  Go bowling, ice skating or a trip to the mall for pretzels and candy. Make sure you set the expectation that you want to be silly. The goal is to have a laughter filled evening together.

3. Give them control. Let them choose the movie. How often have you let your loved one choose a movie that you had no interest in? This is the time to let them choose. And le the choices flow! Whether it is candy or popcorn, indulge your sweetie. Just make sure that you get advanced tickets for the movie and time you want. It’s not romantic to be turned away at a busy ticket counter!

4. Set the scene. It may be too late to get a dinner reservation at the most coveted restaurants, but that doesn’t mean you have to go out. Clear away the coffee table, and set up a picnic on the floor, dim the lights and you have your own romantic place.

Whatever you end up doing on Valentine’s Day, it really is the thought that counts. You know this person enough to know what makes them feel validated and loved. Tap into that to give them a truly memorable moment. And don’t forget to share your stories with me!
